- Some airlines allow senior citizens requiring constant assistance, as well as anyone who is not self-reliant, to purchase a single ticket and receive a second seat free of charge. This policy may be available on domestic flights but passengers must still pay all taxes on the second seat.
- Some airlines provide the elderly suffering from seriously reduced mobility and the disabled with an adjoining seat or one with additional legroom at a discount or free of charge. The offer may only be available if the passenger calls the airline at least 24 hours before a departure.
- Some air carriers provide seating with extra legroom or mobile armrests to special needs passengers but require those who need an assistant to book an extra seat at full cost. They may also prohibit flight attendants from lifting heavy items for passengers or assisting in personal hygiene during the flight.
- Each airline has established its own policy regarding passengers with special needs and their caretakers. To ensure you have the most up-to-date information at the time of travel, it is best to contact the airline well in advance of your travel date to find out what charges may apply.
