Most ordinary affiliate marketers make a wrong assumption about selling. They view the selling once as an objective. Heck, most don't have a long term business plan to begin with. So of course, they cannot followup or follow through.
Super affiliates start with an arsenal of more than one product. When they pitch a product, they have one eye on the current pitch and other on future pitches. They use the launch and sale of one product to promote the launch and sale of other products. They have back end, up-sell and cross-sell products waiting in the wings and ready to be pitched.
Exactly like a baseball pitcher, the super affiliate follows through when he throws a pitch. And he can follow through with different pitches to the same costumer time, after time, after time.
A baseball pitcher might have a fast ball, a slider, and a curve ball. Well the affiliate marketer has the front end sale, the back end sale, and the up-sell.
Here is how super affiliates follow through:
- Windup. Do your research and your homework so every product that you pitch is a good one.
- Pitch the product. Put everything you have in that pitch that you throw just like a good baseball pitcher would do.
- Build a list. Put an opt-in box on all your websites. Write at least 10 follow up messages into every autoresponder. If you don't build a list you won't be able to pitch your prospects again. Don't get lazy on this - just do it!
- Follow through after the pitch by contacting every single potential costumer at least 7 - 10 times. Most first-time prospects need to see an offer multiple times before they will buy. That's what those 10 follow up messages are for.
- Follow up with additional product pitches to your existing costumers. You should have these products ready to go, with good promotional follow up email messages, before you pitch the first product.
I cannot stress strongly enough just how important following through is. Super affiliates understand this. If you ever want to become one of those super affiliates, you need to understand, recognize and hone to perfection your follow through technique.
Now don't make the mistake of thinking this advice only applies to newsletter marketers. Of course I strongly advise to build a list. It's not that hard. But there is always a way to get costumers - not just prospects, but costumers - to come back to your site and buy from you again.
Great content keeps them coming back. A community or forum keeps them coming back. Get them to bookmark your site, and they are likely to keep coming back. Get on twitter and build up your followers. That can get them coming back. Set up a blog and invite them to comment. Running a poll, survey, a contest, giveaway... All those things will keep them coming back.
Let's say you are primarily a PPC affiliate. You can still come up with ingenious ways to capture prospect information. For example you can send prospects to a lead capture page. Or you can get them to opt-in by offering to send them notices of sales, discounts, free shipping and so on.
Once you have got that prospect's email, you can turn them into costumer, and then you can pitch them again and again. Trust me, there are a lot more super affiliates finding clever ways to capture prospect and costumer information than you realize, and for all kinds of physical products, not just digital goods.
Just remember that the point here is not building a list. The goal is to keep selling to people who are already costumers. Like today's super affiliates, you want to be able to follow through and follow up, so you can throw that pitch again and again.
