Pico is one of the nine archipelago isles that lie between Portugal and North America and was created by eruptions from a volcano that is currently dormant.

Be amazed by the majestic sight of the mountain towering 7,713 ft into the sky but don't worry about sudden eruptions - the volcano hasn't been active since 1718.
Much of the landscape you see on the island is in fact created by the eruptions.
Lava fields across the land have turned black after solidifying and now cover many parts of the region.
But the natives have put the substance to good use and built homes from it, as you'll notice on your visit.
There are also pyramids built from blocks of the solid lava called maroicas dotted around, which adds to the character of the island.
For some more fantastic views, travel to the eastern part of Pico to see crater lakes and volcanic cones at the Planalto da Achada, while the bizarre rock formation of Arcos do Cachorro on the north coast houses tunnels, caves and grottos.
Make the most of the swimming holes and enjoy a taste of paradise on the island.
If you're lucky, a sandy beach might also appear during your stay, as they surface from under the water from time to time.
Head into the villages if you want to experience hustle and bustle and for some festival spirit, travel during July and August and take part in the island's fiestas.
