      Accidents happen every day. If you are involved in any type of accident, make sure you take the proper steps to ensure that you receive the care and compensation that you need and may deserve. Maryland accident investigation procedures are different from those of other states; it is important to familiarize yourself with the procedures for the state that you reside in, and/or the state in which the accident occurred.

    The Accident Report

    • The accident report serves as the starting point for any type of Maryland accident investigation. This is the basis for law enforcement and the judicial system in terms of gathering information about, and familiarizing themselves with, the details of an accident. An accident report is considered valid if it has been properly filed and:

      1. In the case of an automobile accident, it has been filed within 15 days if injury to any persons in the accident occurred;

      2. In the case of workplace accidents, it has been filed within 24-72 hours and is accompanied by the proper physician's forms and other documentation.

    Maryland Accident Investigation Steps

    • In most cases, when you are involved in an accident in any state, the following things will take place once the accident report has been filed and submitted:

      1. If you have been seriously injured, it is important that you speak with a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible, in order for you to know and protect your legal rights;

      2. An insurance claims adjuster will be assigned to review your claim;

      3. If it is a workplace related accident, the Human Resources or other applicable department will review your claim.

    Moving Forward

    • Once your claim or accident report has been reviewed, it is important to follow through with your insurance company, employer, law enforcement officials, and personal injury attorney; this is especially important if your employer or insurance company denies your claim, or if it determined that further investigation is warranted.
