- The American Orient Express operated vintage steamliner trains. During the day, passengers could relax in the dome car. Enclosed with glass, the dome car offered panoramic views of the scenery. In addition to the picturesque views, the dome car featured a library and bar as well as upholstered booths with seating for 72 passengers. Every evening drinks and snacks were served in the lounge car. These cars were luxuriously decorated with plush furniture and floral arrangements. Additionally, the lounge car featured live piano music and a full service bar. Like the lounge cars, the observation cars were luxuriously decorated with plush furniture. As the name implies, the observation car allowed fabulous views of the scenery through large windows. When it was time for a bite to eat, passengers enjoyed fine dining while seated at tables for two or four.
- Passengers slept onboard the train in one of six sleeping cars. Each private cabin featured large windows, coffee and tea service and an attendant. There were several cabins available including single and double sleepers and single, double and triple suites. Most cabins included sinks and toilets in addition to a bed or beds and seating.
- There were five separate journeys available to passengers. The Antebellum South Journey traveled through the scenic and historical South. Destinations included Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington D.C. In addition to the mansions, gardens and battlefields, this trip featured golfing at world class courses including Kiawah and Harbor Town. As of 2008, costs per person ranged from $4570 to $7,030. Golf fees are not included. Departure dates were in March and April.
- The Rockies, Sierras & Napa Journey began in San Francisco, California and traveled through Napa Valley to Lake Tahoe in Nevada. From there, the train traveled to Utah and then into the mountains of Colorado, ending in Denver. Prices per person ranged from $4,570 to $7030 depending on cabin choice. Trips departed during October and November.
- The Great Northwest and Rockies Journey sampled the lush green landscape of the Northwest before traveling southwest into the Rocky Mountains. The Eastbound trip began in Seattle, Washington, traveled through Mount Rainier National Park then traveled south to the Columbia River Gorge. On the fourth day, the train moved through Idaho and then onto Glacier National Park in Montana. Prices per person ranged from $4,960 to $7,420. Trips departed during July, August and September.
- The National Parks of the West Journey began in Albuquerque, New Mexico and traveled through the majestic mountains lakes and canyons of the American Southwest. Departing from New Mexico and traveling through Sedona, Arizona, the train passed through Grand Canyon National Park and then on to Las Vegas, Nevada. From there, the trip passed through Zion National Park and then Salt Lake City, Utah. Finally, passengers arrived in Wyoming where they visited Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Prices per person ranged from $5,500 to $8,520. Trips departed in May and June.
- The Journey through Mexico's Copper Canyon was the only trip which did not travel through the United States. Instead, travelers experienced the culture and colorful landscape of Mexico. The seven-day journey began in Chihuahua, Mexico with a greeting at the airport. The following day, the train traveled through Creel, Mexico and then on to Copper Canyon and Divisadero before moving on to Alamos, San Carlos and Los Mochis, Mexico. The journey ended in Mazaltan. Prices ranged from $5,070 to $7,230. Trips departed during December and January.
