Picinguaba

Picinguaba:

Picinguaba, in Ubatuba, sums up the traits which make the São Paulo North Shore one of the most attractive stretches on the Brazilian coast.

Luxuriant native vegetation - preserved Atlantic Forest - meets the sand. An international atmosphere created by a constant influx of travelers, mainly from Europe, blends in with a fisherman's village sedate pace.

Picinguaba is one of five beaches within the Picinguaba Nucleus, a conservation unit which is part of Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, or Sea Range State Park.

According to the Forest Institute, the other beaches in the Picinguaba conservation area are Brava da Almada, Fazenda, Praia da Vila, Brava do Cambury and Cambury, on the border of Paraty.

The Picinguaba Fisherman's Village

The beach is home to caiçara communities with a deep sense of heritage. Caiçaras, the traditional inhabitants of Brazil's southeast coast, descend from the interaction of indigenous tribes, Portuguese colonizers, and later, African slaves. In Picinguaba, fishing and other elements of caiçara life have remained strong.

Where to Stay in Picinguaba:

Pousada Picinguaba draws mostly foreign visitors. The pousada's transfer service can whisk you straight from the Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo international airports to an exclusive, English-speaking environment in Picinguaba's lush Atlantic Forest.

Pousada Rosa belongs to artist Rosa Penteado, who specializes in raku pottery. Her pieces add a unique touch to the plesant beachfront inn.

Pousada Santa Martha das Pedras also belongs to a ceramist.

It's not on the beach and doesn't have sea views. Its charm is being in the hills, surrounded by rainforest and just a short walk from the ocean.

Pequena Pousada da Picinguaba, or Pousada da Betty, has large gardens and 180-degree beach views.
