A twisted ankle is very painful.
This is caused by the tearing of one or more ligaments in your feet.
This is also known as a sprain.
There are three degrees of this kind of sprains.
They are classified as 1, 2, or 3.
To properly diagnose this, you need to see a physician.
The doctor has to examine the injured joint to see the extent of the tearing on the ligament.
It is important that a physician diagnose this so you could properly treat it as well.
You might be surprised that a sprained ankle would demand so much attention.
There are a lot of people who brush off this condition as "just a sprain".
What most people do not know is that when a sprain is neglected, there is a bigger chance of it recurring.
A neglected sprain also causes the joint to weaken as well.
A sprain happens when there is sudden movement or change in the direction of the movement is asserted on the joint.
This can overstretch the ligaments that support the joint.
When the ligaments are overstretched, they then tear and cause some bleeding.
This often occurs during activities that involve jumping, running and frequent change in direction.
Recovering from a sprain can be pretty quick if you religiously follow doctor's orders.
Most people find it difficult to follow the doctor's orders of immobilization.
There is a treatment called RICE, which means acute rest, ice, compression and elevation, which is prescribed for sprains.
And acute rest sometimes would entail complete immobilization of the joint.
Complete immobilization also helps your foot recover faster than a tubular bandage, especially if the ligament is completely torn.
Ice also helps reduce the swelling.
Put some ice on it for ten to fifteen minutes.
Then take the ice off for another then to fifteen minutes after.
If you ice the sprain too long, this may cause cold injuries.
