Does Omega 3 Keep Eskimos Healthier

Eskimos have less heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and skin problems. Why is that? They eat a lot of fatty fish? You may be thinking that eating a high fat diet would put them in a high risk category for these diseases. They consume a lot of whale, seal and salmon. After studying the Eskimo diet and what they were mainly consuming, it was found that even though the fish are very fatty, they contain a good type of fat. The fish was rich in omega 3 fatty acids instead of the bad fat omega 6.

Therefore if we wish to lead a long healthy life, do we have to eat like an Eskimo? After studying the omega 3 for quite sometime now, I would say €no.€ We don't need to eat like an Eskimo, but you do need to either eat some of the food products they eat, such as salmon to our diet or take supplements.

The westerners usually do not consume that much of fish. It's not as easy to get the oily fish we need to get a sufficient amount of the omega 3 fatty acids. Our western diet promotes more catfish and cod than salmon and tuna. You can find fresh fish in the grocery stores , but right out of the water fish is so much better. The fish stored in the grocery cooler has been there for who know hows long. Walking through the fish market is a hellish experience. The smell of the fish is pretty strong. Someone once told me that if it smells fishy, then it's old. Well, that fish is definitely fishy smelling.

So how to eat like an Eskimo? Or at least get some of the omega 3 fatty acids into our diet? You should eat more tuna and salmon if its possible for you. Two times a week is recommended. Most won't do that. Most families don't eat fish even once a week, let alone twice. The only way to truly get enough omega 3 into your diet is to take supplements. These supplements can be found in the vitamin area of your drug stores, grocery stores, health food stores and on-line.

Fish oil is the way most know to get their omega 3 DHA and EPA . A dosage of around 3 grams a day or a gel tablet with every meal should be sufficient. No more then 3 a day. Another type to take is flax seed oil. Same amount is recommended. The only difference is flax seed oil contains omega 3 ALA which your body would have to convert into DHA and EPA to work like fish oil does. If your body cannot convert the ALA properly, you may still not be getting enough omega 3 to meet your requirements. A blood test after 6 weeks could indicate how well it is working for you.

Don't eat like an Eskimo unless you enjoy it, but get the benefits of their diet through supplements. By getting enough Omega 3 fatty acids into your diet, you may live a longer healthier life.
