The characteristics of Romex® 14/2 are similar to the other gauge size of NM-B cable with the main difference being the size and amperage requirements.
The 14 AWG 2 conductor Romex® cable is the most popular size because it's used in homes and buildings to run power from the electrical box to the lights, outlets and appliances.
The 14 AWG through 10 AWG NMB cables are considered circuit sizes because they're used in homes and buildings.
Larger sizes are more commonly used to run a new source of power to a garage, barn or even a spa or hot tub that's being hooked up.
The size of Romex® that runs a new power source will depend on the amount of power you need to distribute throughout the barn or garage.
Essentially, the 6 AWG 3 conductor cable will be broken into smaller pieces to send power throughout the various outlets and lights that need power.
Romex® 14/2 has a gray jacket that designates it as a 14 AWG compared to a 12 AWG or 10 AWG Romex® cable.
This makes it much easier for electricians to quote a replacement cost for a homeowner rather than having to break open the wire, ruin it, and then quote the job.
The 12 comes with a yellow jacket and the 10 comes with an orange jacket.
The 14 2 cable weighs about 57 pound per 1000 feet and has a solid copper strand for each conductor.
The most common way for contractors, electricians and installers to order it would be one 250 foot coils so that it's easier to carry around.
The 14 2 has a black THHN wire, a white THHN wire and a bare copper ground wire.
The ground wire is almost always considered "extra" above the amount of conductors it has.
The maximum temperature that it can handle is 90ºC in dry locations only.
Remember this is an indoor only cable due to the severe impact moisture can have on the outer jacket.
Any indoor application that will be near moisture, chemicals, oils or gasses should most definitely be avoided at all costs.
Trying to sneak by with a cable that doesn't fit in the particular application will only result in more complicated problems down the road.
Speak to your supplier to see if Romex® NMB wire is right for your situation.
If you need to run power outdoors they can help fit you with the right amount of protection for the least amount of additional cost.
