- 1). Maintain a running list of required camping gear. Divide the list according to seasons. Include the needs of child campers as part of a sub-list. Edit your list after each camping trip, adding and deleting items as needed. Pack your gear according to your list.
- 2). Pack daytime items at the top of your packs; place nighttime items at the bottom. Place an extra sweater or jacket at the top of each pack for easy access.
- 3). Freeze food, and place it in zipper-top bags; use the frozen items to keep your other perishables cold. This eliminates the need to purchase or carry ice.
- 4). Keep a fully equipped, first-aid kit accessible at all times. Don't save space by purchasing a low-quality kit. Include a flashlight, flares and extra batteries. Don't rely on a cell phone for communication; many remote areas don't have cell phone reception.
- 5). Prepare for the possibility of inclement weather. Include a poncho and other rain attire when you pack your gear. Pack perishables -- including crackers and canned goods -- in case rain negates the possibility of cooking on a campstove.
