The Best Way to Fight Traffic Light Tickets

    • 1). Check the "not guilty" box on the ticket.

    • 2). Type up and print out a letter to the judge explaining what happened and why you do not believe you are guilty. In some states, a judge can grant you a pardon, which means you are excused from the ticket and will not need to appear in court.

    • 3). Mail the letter and ticket to the address on the ticket. Do this as soon as possible to expedite the appeal process.

    • 4). Show up for your court date if you are issued a summons to appear. In some states, the only way to fight a traffic light ticket is by testifying against the ticketing officer in court. It is advised to hire a lawyer for this, although it is not mandatory.

    • 5). Argue your case (or let your attorney do it) before the judge, using the same reasoning you would in the earlier letter. Be calm and polite, state only the facts and do not interrupt the judge or the ticketing officer when they are speaking. Present any evidence you may have that supports your case.
