How to Decide Whether to Accept a Job Offer

    • 1). Get a notepad and a writing instrument to keep score of the job’s pros and cons. Divide a piece of paper in half. Write “Pros” on one side of the paper and “Cons” on the other side of the paper.

    • 2). Think about the company and its culture. Do you associate them with words like interesting and creative or selfish and uncaring?

    • 3). List the word “Culture” on the appropriate side of the paper, along with any associations you came up with, and then add a numerical score from one to 10 if it is on the “Pro” side or from negative one to negative 10 if it is on the “Con” side.

    • 4). Think about how much the company has offered to give you in salary, benefits and compensation. Will that amount cover your cost of living? Does that amount match or exceed what you earned with your last job? Add the word “Money” to the list and its score.

    • 5). Think about where the company is. How can you get to work and how long would it take you? Add the word “Location” to the list and its score.

    • 6). Think about how much you would enjoy, or not enjoy, performing the job every day. Add the word “Enjoyment” to the list and its score.

    • 7). Think about how long the job will last. Is it a temporary, seasonal or permanent job? Does this match your expectations? Add the word “Duration” to the list and its score.

    • 8). Think about how much prestige the job or working for that company would command. Does this match your expectations? Add the word “Prestige” to the list and its score.

    • 9). Tally up the number of the pro and con points, using a calculator if you need to, and arrive at your decision of whether to accept the job offer.
