How to Mount Telemark Bindings on Alpine Skis

    • 1). Check the manufacturer's instructions to see if they have a recommended binding location. If they do, follow it. If not, place the ski on a carpetless floor or table with the topsheet facing up.

    • 2). Push down on the center of the ski with your hand until the base is flat against the surface. Slide a credit card under the tip of the ski until it hits the base. Mark this point with a piece of masking tape.

    • 3). Slide the credit card under the tail until it makes contact with the base, all while keeping the weight of your hand on the center of the ski to force the pocket flat. Mark the contact point with a piece of masking tape.

    • 4). Measure the difference between the two tape points and place a marker or piece of tape at the midpoint. This is center running surface of your ski. Remove the tape so only the midpoint of the running surface is marked.

    • 5). Place a piece of four inch masking tape on the floor and stand with your big toe reaching the end of the tape. Place another piece of tape on the floor at the back of the heel. Curl the toes upward and slide the card underneath until it hits the ball. Mark a piece one quarter inch beyond this on the floor with a piece of tape. This is center ball.

    • 6). Measure the distances between center ball and the heel tape (ball length) and the front of the toe to the heel tape (foot length).

    • 7). Take the ski boot and measure from the front edge to the rear edge (sole length) and the pins to the rear edge (pin length).

    • 8). Subtract foot length from sole length and divide the number in half. Subtract this number from the pin length. Subtract ball length from this number to get the Center Ball/Center Running Length measurement for mounting the bindings.

    • 9). Take the binding mount template and locate the template pin line. Draw a line behind this line the same length as the measured distance of center ball/center running surface.

    • 10

Place the template on the ski with the drawn line of the template at the same location as the taped mark point on the ski.

    • 11

Mount the ski in the vice grips and carefully drill the holes through the template markers. Remove the ski from the vise grips and flip it upside down to remove the drill dust.

    • 12

Place the ski back in the vise grips. Drizzle some wood glue in the holes. Line up with the binding holes with the drilled holes and screw the binding into the ski, starting with the front screw. Do not screw all screws in at once. Rather, screw each in halfway, then tighten all the screws.

    • 13

Place the ski boot in the toe piece of the binding. Place the heel piece directly under the heel of the binding, then carefully remove the boot and mark the holes in the heel piece.

    • 14

Drill the heelpiece holes, then remove the ski from the vice grips and tape out the drill dust. Remount the ski in the vice grips and drizzle some wood glue into the holes, then screw the heelpiece into the heel holes.

    • 15

Let the glue set overnight before skiing on the skis.
