How Do I Install Taco Pumps?

    • 1). Turn off the power to the pump system. Most boiler systems have a main power shut-off switch that cuts off all power going to the pumps.

    • 2). Shut off the water valves for the boiler zone you are working on. If you have only one zone, shut off the main water supply to the boiler.

    • 3). Place an empty bucket underneath the pump you are replacing. Once you remove the old pump, the water in the pipes will pour out and can be caught by the empty bucket.

    • 4). Disconnect the power cables going to the old pump. These may be behind a cover that will need to be removed by backing out the holding screws with a screwdriver. Once you have access to the power cables, simply untwist them or unscrew them from the pump.

    • 5). Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the bolts that hold the old pump in place. Most Taco pumps are held in place by four bolts.

    • 6). Bolt the new Taco pump into place with the arrow indicator pointing down. Use the adjustable wrench to tighten the bolts to secure the pump into place.

    • 7). Reconnect the power to the new Taco pump. Attach the power cables to the pumps, making sure that the positive, negative and ground are each attached to the correct receiver. Use wire nuts to cover any exposed wiring and re-cover the power lines with the cover removed in step 4. Wire nuts are made of plastic and are used to safely twist wires together and provide both insulation and protection to the wires.

    • 8). Reopen the water valves and turn the switch to restore power to the pumps. Depending on your system, it will automatically replace the water that was lost during the installation process.
