How to Become a Notary Public in Orange County, Virginia

    • 1). Determine that you meet the requirements set forth by Virginia in order to qualify for a notary public commission. You must be 18 years or older, able to read and write English and have never been convicted of a felony. If you have been convicted of a felony, then you need to have been pardoned and your civil rights restored in order to obtain a commission.

    • 2). Fill out an "Application for Appointment as a Virginia Notary Public" form. This application can be obtained from the clerk's office of the Orange County Circuit Court. It is also available online from the Virginia Secretary of the Commonwealth's website. All the questions on the application must be completed or the form will be returned to you.

    • 3). Mail the completed paperwork, signed and notarized, to the Secretary of the Commonwealth Notary Division. You must also include a check or money order for $45, payable to the Treasurer of Virginia, with your application. You will be notified by mail when your commission has been issued.

    • 4). Go to the Orange Circuit County Court's clerk office to claim your commission and take the oath of office. You will also be required to pay the clerk's office a $10 fee at that time. If you do not claim you commission within 60 days of it being issued, the commission becomes invalid.
