- 1). Attend an approved CNA training program. As of June 2010, Florida has 336 programs dispersed among high schools, community colleges, technical/vocational schools, hospitals and private facilities. Requirements vary from program to program, but all require a high school diploma or equivalent at minimum.
- 2). Take the Florida CNA licensure exam. The exam has two parts: written and skill performance. You must pass both parts within two years of each other to obtain licensure.
- 3). Complete the CNA licensure application available on the Florida Department of Health website. In addition to the application, you must also submit a fingerprint card and submit to a background check.
- 4). Complete in-service hours to maintain your licensure. You must complete at least 12 in-service hours per year, and subjects must include HIV/AIDS and infection control, domestic violence, medical record documentation, resident rights, communication with cognitively impaired patients, CPR skills and medical error prevention and safety.
- 5). Renew your CNA license every two years by completing the renewal application. With the application you must also submit documentation of completed in-service hours and agree to another background check.
