- 1). Make sure you plan your trip so that you can enjoy the best weather possible. The best time of year to travel to Ireland's west coast for your Kerry Drive is in late spring or summer.
- 2). Make sure your passport is in order, or obtain a passport prior to booking your trip to Ireland. Also, purchase airline tickets, reserve lodging and arrange transportation for this trip. An automobile is preferable. Killarney is the best place to start and end your trip. If at all possible, try to stay in one of the little coastal towns that dot the drive. Stay in Dingle Bay and in the morning you can watch the fishing fleet be escorted out to sea by its very own dolphin, "Fungie," who has been doing this for 20 years. You might like to try the Dingle Bay Hotel, located right across from the harbor, with a pub that boasts live music . It is also very close to many shops and eateries.
- 3). Make sure to exchange your dollars for Euros when you get over there, as it is the recognized form of currency in Ireland. Although, most of the established businesses there do accept credit cards, it doesn’t hurt to have cash on hand for some of the smaller shops and pubs.
- 4). Make sure you have plenty of time for this drive. Four days is recommended due to travel to and from Ireland and the length of the drive. The ring of Kerry drive is about 110 miles. You can do the drive in one day, but two days are recommended so that there can be some exploration while on the drive. There are a lot of interesting places to visit on this drive like the Muckross House and abbey with a great view of the lake. You might also want to stop and explore Staigue Fort, one of the best known and preserved iron age forts in Ireland. The Watermark Hotel is a nice place to stop for lunch on your Ring of Kerry Drive. The cuisines range from European, to Irish, to contemporary and reservations are recommended.
