Ideas for Garden Ponds

    Site Selection

    • The water should be exposed to full sunlight, as aquatic plants and fish will not thrive in heavily shaded areas. Ponds that are placed too close to trees may kill or damage part of the tree by suffocating the root structure. Autumn leaves can quickly fill up the water-holding structure if it is too close in proximity to the overhanging limbs. If a large plastic liner is to be used for the pond itself, wet and boggy areas should be avoided, as the plastic enclosure might be lifted from the ground in heavy rains. Access to water and electricity needs to be considered, as ponds will need some topping off in the dry heat of summer. Accent lighting or water pumps will need a source of electrical power. Long underground wire runs may be expensive to install.

Private Area or Seen from the Home

    • Most folks do not spend all their time in the garden area. You may want part of the garden pond visible from inside the home. If a fountain feature is to be used in the water, you may also want to have an open window to hear the trickle of the falling water. Children will also have to be considered in the access of the pond. All children love water and eventually will end up in the pond, hopefully not head first. Rock features, access points and even fencing should be taken into the planning of the garden pond.

    Fish and Water

    • Fish are a tranquil addition to the garden pond and can also provide nutrients for the aquatic plants. The actual size of the pond, depending on its water source, may also provide moisture for other portions of the garden. If a spring or good water-runoff area is used to fill the pond, you may want to consider using the excess water for trees, shrubs or vegetable gardens. Various species of fish can also be raised in the garden pond, not necessarily the typical koi. Many species of edible fish can also be raised and can survive winters if extra oxygen is provided during the colder months.
