- According to Rule 1.9 of the American Bar Association's Model Rules of Professional Responsibility, attorneys cannot represent clients who are now opposing a past client in the same or substantially related matter unless you are informed of the representation and give written consent to the attorney. If the representation of your ex-wife is not adverse to you and is not related, the attorney is generally free to represent her.
