How to Change a Cosigner on a Car Title Through the DMV

    • 1). Check your car's odometer reading and record it.

    • 2). Check your car's registration certificate for the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and record it. The VIN is also engraved somewhere on your car, although the exact location is different for different makes and models.

    • 3). Download an Application for Duplicate Title (or its equivalent in your state) from the website of your state's DMV, complete it and sign it. This form will require your VIN and odometer reading.

    • 4). Have your cosigner sign the Application for Duplicate Title. In some states, the cosigner's signature must be notarized.

    • 5). Go to your local DMV office with your driver's license, title certificate, registration certificate and Application for Duplicate Title. Pay the appropriate fee and have a new title certificate issued in your name.
