Florida is home to several highly ranked public and private medical schools, including one ranked among the nation's top 60 medical schools in primary care by "U.S. News &World Report," and two ranked among the nation's top 55 medical schools in research by the same magazine. These medical schools offer programs leading toward a variety of degrees, including master's, Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) and Doctor of Philosophy. - The College of Medicine at Florida State University, a public research university, was founded in 2000. The college has five departments, including biomedical sciences, medical humanities and social sciences, clinical sciences, geriatrics and family medicine and rural health. Undergraduates can participate in research projects with the college's biomedical sciences and medical humanities and social sciences departments. The college grants Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degrees as well as Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in biomedical sciences. In addition to its main campus in Tallahassee, the College of Medicine has additional campuses in Orlando, Pensacola, Sarasota, Daytona Beach and Fort Pierce. The Florida State University College of Medicine tied for 56th in the primary care category in the "U.S. News & World Report" 2010 ranking of medical schools.

The college has 20 clinical departments and six basic science departments. The department of surgery includes 24 areas of study, and the department of medicine has 16 areas.
