- 1). Wash hair with a volumizing shampoo but skip the conditioner while washing. Conditioner will soften hair and not hold the curls. Spray a hair-detangler onto the hair and comb through to remove any tangles.
- 2). Apply a quarter-size amount of curling gel to the palm of one hand and rub hands together. Work the gel through the hair starting from the tips of the hair and upward to the roots. Avoid putting too much gel at the root area because this will weigh down the hair instead of adding volume.
- 3). Dry the hair with a hairdryer set to a warm setting. As you dry, use a paddle brush to lift up the roots to add volume before curling.
- 4). Comb out a section of hair no wider than the length of the curler. Spray the hair lightly with light-hold hairspray. Roll the hair around the curler, making sure to tuck in the ends of the hair as you roll, and wind up to the scalp. The hair must roll up to the scalp completely to get the most volume. Repeat the process throughout your entire head of hair.
- 5). Spray the hair with hairspray to secure the curls. Wait for the curlers to cool completely to close the cuticle and secure the curl. This typically takes 10 to 15 minutes.
- 6). Remove the curlers when they are cool. Avoid tugging or pulling the curlers out. This will decrease the amount of curl left behind.
- 7). Touch up any areas with a curling iron. Wrap the hair around the curling iron and hold for 10 seconds. Release and secure with hairspray. Pull a wide-tooth comb through your hair to separate the curls. Create a wavy texture by brushing the hair with a paddle brush.
