- 1). Create a design plan. Sketch out the way you want the yard to look. Take into account the visual impact of the stone and the type of soil the stones will sit on.
- 2). Measure the area. When you install landscape stone, it's essential to order the right amount and lay it out in a design that makes sense. Have a close estimate of the area's length and width.
- 3). Choose the type of landscaping stone that will look best in the space. Go to a quarry or home improvement center and look through the options, including fieldstone, flagstone, limestone and quarry stone. Stone can also be special ordered online but there will be significant shipping and handling charges.
- 4). Prepare the ground by removing turf, plant material and debris with a shovel or other garden tools. Fill in dips with soil to level them out. Rake the entire area to smooth it out.
- 5). Make the ground where you'll install landscape stone slightly lower than the surrounding area. This will help the stones stay in place and prevent movement.
- 6). Follow the design and place the landscape stones in the desired location. Rearrange them, if needed, to create the desired look. Trim them with a tile cutter if they're not the right size.
- 7). Fill the cracks in to keep the stones in place. You can use dirt, sand, gravel or grout, depending on the look you're going for. Sand, dirt and gravel can be poured over the stone and swept between the individual pieces. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for grout.
