The size of the tools you choose for your fireplace depends on a variety of factors. If you have a large fireplace you will benefit from large fireplace tools, so that you can use them even in the back of the fireplace without the risk of burning your hand. If you use your fireplace often, you also may want more durable, sturdy, larger tools. If you have a gas or nonoperational fireplace, you may want small decorative tools or none at all. - Tongs are considered large when they are at least 36 inches long and ½ inch thick. They are usually made from wrought iron. This is an important tool to have long enough to reach the furthest logs in your hearth to increase safety and effectiveness when moving lit logs.
- A poker is used to move logs to their best wood-burning position or to reignite the fire. The curved hook poker has a special use for pulling logs into their ideal place. For a large poker, look for one that is 3 feet long.
- A shovel is another primary tool to remove cold cinders and ash from your firebox. Too much ash is unsafe and unattractive. Make sure the ashes are cool before you remove them. The larger the tool, the more efficiently you can clean your hearth.
