- 1). Visit amtrak.com. This is the most convenient way to get up-to-date information on schedules and routes. Input your destination, departure date and time, and number of passengers. Indicate whether you wish to purchase a round-trip or one-way ticket. Click "next" for available trains and prices. Click on "weekly specials" or "hot deals" for special Internet savings on selected routes and dates.
- 2). Find out if you are eligible for a discount. Amtrak offers a Veterans Advantage and Student Advantage discount card good for 15% off rail fare. Discounts are also available for children, ISIC card holders, seniors and active military, as well as AAA and NARP members.
- 3). Make your reservations several weeks in advance, particularly if you are traveling during a holiday period. This will enable you to purchase fares at a lower price.
- 4). Online: Book through Amtrak's online reservation system. Once you have selected your desired route, indicate whether you qualify for a discount. Input a promotion code if you have one. Complete the form with your credit card information. You will have the option to pick up your ticket at the station or have it mailed to you for an additional fee. If you choose to pick up your ticket from the station, write down or print out your confirmation number, which will be sent to you via e-mail and displayed on the order confirmation page.
- 5). By phone: Book over the phone by calling (800) USA-RAIL. Amtrak uses an automated reservation system and is available 24 hours a day. Have your travel, discount and credit card information handy.
- 6). In person: Visit an Amtrak station. You can book travel at the ticketing window. Both cash and credit cards are accepted. Amtrak does not accept personal checks. Alternatively, you can purchase tickets through Amtrak's Quik-Trak kiosk at the station.
