- There is the story in the Bible of the wise men who brought the Christ child gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh (Matthew 2:11). Frankincense and other healing oils, including myrrh, hyssop and spikenard are mentioned throughout ancient scripture. The most well known, frankincense, was and is considered an oil of great value. It has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and astringent properties. It has been used for rheumatism, respiratory and urinary tract infections, skin diseases and even syphilis.
- The ancient Greeks used essential oils in their baths, incense and medicines. The Greek physician Hippocrates used essential oils in aromatherapy massage treatments. One of the most common essential oils used by this ancient civilization was lavender. Lavender is also one of the most versatile essential oils. Not only is it fragrant and aromatic, but also has a number of medicinal uses. It has analgesic, sedative, antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. It can be used to relieve stress, as a natural insecticide or even to freshen linens and clothes.
- It is no secret that the ancient Egyptians used essential oils quite extensively in their cosmetics, religious rituals and burial practices. Thyme was commonly used to prepare bodies for burial. It has powerful antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. It is used medicinally to treat coughs, colds and the flu. It helps support the respiratory and immune systems.
- Aromatherapy products abound in the natural health markets today. Many types of candles, massage oils, lotions and a variety of personal care items often now include popular essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, patchouli, chamomile and sandalwood. They are commonly used in massage therapy and reflexology treatments. When trying aromatherapy products for the first time, you should be aware of the difference between aromatic oils and true essential oils. Look for products that contain 100 percent pure essential oils, which are extracted during the distillation process. Aromatic oils are often synthetic oils and may cause allergic reactions.
- Current scientific research supports the use of essential oils and aromatherapy in alternative medicine. Studies have been conducted on the use of aromatherapy for insomnia, dementia, high blood pressure, hypertension, infertility and even cancer. A study done by the Centre for the Study of Complementary Medicine concluded that aromatherapy massage was beneficial to cancer patients suffering from pain, stress and anxiety associated with palliative care. A similar study on aromatherapy and depression by Dr. Gary Schwartz, at Yale University, found that some essential oils "affect the nervous system and even reduce blood pressure," and concluded that "the calming and relaxing effect of the essential oils and massage can help relieve accumulated tensions and anxieties."
