Physical Education (PE) activities for elementary students teach a variety of lessons, including teamwork, agility, balance, body control, fitness, and nutrition. Providing students with a variety of activities keeps lessons interesting and fresh, encouraging students to be active and involved. Choose lessons that focus on different topics so students gain a variety of knowledge and experience. - Dancing during elementary PE classes allows students to be creative and express their individuality. With a free dance period, students can dance around without instruction. Group dancing can be taught with square dancing, or having students learn a dance from the instructor.
- Elementary students enjoy working with bean bags. Bean bags are a safe item that can be thrown, slid, and tossed during games. Have students throw bean bags through hoops or into baskets. Students may also use hockey sticks or their feet to kick or slide bean bags into goals.
For a group activity, have students stand in a circle and toss bean bags across the circle to other students. Variations include using different colored bean bags and calling out colors, so that students with that color toss the bean bag. - A large parachute provides many fun activities for elementary students. Each student can grab a side of the parachute and move it up and down to bounce objects off of the top of the parachute. Instructors can call out the names of students and let them run under the parachute while it is in motion to reach the other side. Using a parachute teaches students cooperation and teamwork, since it takes the entire class to move the parachute. Have students move together to raise the parachute slowly, move it quickly, and place it gently on the ground. Bean bags and other small balls can be placed on the parachute before the students move it, so when they shake the parachute, the balls bounce.
