Flying masterpieces. One of the primary art movements in the 70s, photorealism can be experienced in the Kansas University Art Museum. If the viewer can disregard their large proportions and squint from across the room, it's hard to tell whether they're pigment or celluloid.
When it comes to this art form, there is something involved that is referred to as a working medium. In this case, the artist will apply paint onto a canvass later achieving a replica of the photograph. An exhibit was specially organized by two friends, one of them a leading aviation and aerospace attorney, to showcase the paintings of 22 artists. There were diverse pieces in the collection.
Someone came with a painting of a horse. Riding a horse is a woman and this woman has two of her brothers on the forefront and one even has a model plane. Designing a piece with a floating plane in a bathtub was one artist and aside from this he also utilized other old toys by placing a car beside a helicopter. There were a lot of artists and one had a plane on an aquarium floor.
Here, the artists make use of numerous styles of painting and this is why they are able to reproduce an almost exact copy of the photograph that they started with. What Renaissance artists did was use grids to enlarge their sketches for murals and this same trick was used by the artists in the show.
Up in the air was an air borne fighter jet painted by another artist. In this case, what you will notice is how well the artists make use of clear, precise lines and color in their works. It was an air ship that one of the artists painted and to mimic his antique photographs, he used tints.
What could have been the reasons why artists sometimes choose to paint photographs? By using a picture as a guide, the artist loses any personal connection with the piece. It is the artist who will get to decide what goes onto the canvass. The reason why artists in photorealism use brushes and air guns is to retain the proficiency of the picture.
Pure dexterity is what is being displayed in this show. There is nothing wrong with pop art or abstract pieces but photorealism simply wants to bring people back to recognizable imagery in the art world. Thanks to the 22 artists and the Whitney Museum in New York, all of the forces of photorealism were able to combine.
The movement lives on. It is not easy creating these masterpieces hence the hefty price tag. Most people's initial reaction, he pointed out, would be, my God, how did he do it? Tedious work was involved in each work.
