How to Visit Conroe, Texas

    • 1). Head out to Lake Conroe west of town for boating, fishing, water skiing, jet skiing or swimming. Resorts and rental condos abound. You can even get married out on the lake on the "Southern Empress," a replica of a nineteenth-century paddle-wheel boat.

    • 2). Savor the performing arts at the Crighton Theatre, downtown on 234 North Main. Originally a motion picture palace, the Crighton was renovated in the 1970s and turned into a venue for music and live theater.

    • 3). Dust off your doublet and head out to the Texas Renaissance Festival at 21778 FM 1774 in Plantersville, just west of Conroe. Running from the middle of October to the end of November, the "Ren Fest" has been a popular draw since 1974. It features jousting matches, sword fighting, falconry, dancers, musicians, artisans, leather mugs, busty "wenches" in low-cut dresses, wagon-loads of turkey legs and lots of people with funny accents saying "Huzzah!"

    • 4). Bring your golf clubs when you come to Conroe. There's over thirty private and public courses in Montgomery County proper, and many more just outside the county lines.

    • 5). Enjoy all the major touring musical acts at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, though it's part of The Woodlands, just south of Conroe. The address is 2005 Lake Robbins Drive in Spring, Texas.

    • 6). Break free of the tyranny of hyper-scheduled play dates and treat your children to a truly good time at the 7 Acre Wood at 4401 North Frazier. This wooded park offers such attractions as a playground, miniature golf, a petting zoo, and a western fort and town. Events and educational enrichment activities are held regularly and the whole facility can be rented out for private parties. There's even a shop with gourmet coffees and sandwiches so the parents can keep occupied. 7 Acre Wood is open Tuesday to Thursday from 9am to 5pm, Friday to Saturday from 9am to dark and Sunday from noon to 5pm. Admission is charged.
