Preparing For Adventure Activities As A Solo Traveler

An important part of solo travel for many people will be the opportunity to try new and different activities, and there are certainly plenty of adventure activities to be found around the world.

One of the things that you do need to consider though is that you aren't traveling with friends or family, so if something does happen you won't have somebody with you to help you through, and if you are going with an adventure activity company, they won't necessarily have your emergency contact details.

This is why you should consider planning ahead and making sure that you do have a plan to fall back on if something goes wrong, meaning you can really throw yourself into the activity and enjoy every adventurous second.

Understanding Your Fitness

An important part of many adventure activities is that it will involve physical activity, and in many cases plenty of it!

This means that you will need to be able to handle the physical demands of the activity, and particularly for long distance hikes or bicycle rides that take you into the wilderness, you need to be confident that you will have the fitness to get you to your destination at the other end of the trip.

The most important thing is that you don't commit to too much and find yourself in over your head with very little option in terms of a way out.

Checking You Are Covered Under Your Insurance Policy

Your travel insurance policy is a very important part of your plans for a solo travel adventure, and it is very important that you check that the activity you are going to be doing is covered by your policy.

There are many exemptions included in policies, with those at the cheaper end of the spectrum often only covering adventure activities with an add-on, which is certainly worth purchasing if necessary. If you are going to be heading into a mountainous or wilderness area where injury could mean needing a helicopter rescue, this is also worth checking, and adding to your policy if needed.

Letting People Know What You Are Doing

Another important thing to bear in mind when you do undertake adventure activities is letting people know what you are doing, and what the timescale for your activity is likely to be.

Having someone who can check to make sure that you have returned safely, even if it is just by checking in with your hostel or you sending an email to a friend once you return to civilization.

If you are returning to a particular location, letting the hostel know when you expect to return, and getting them to raise the alarm if you don't return can be a good idea.

Choosing An Adventure Activity Company

Depending on the adventure activity you are going to be enjoying, you may need to arrange the trip or activity through a professional company if particular equipment or expertise is required. This is certainly not where you should be looking to cut corners and save money, and companies that advertise their safety qualifications will often be some of the ones worth considering.

Documenting Your Adventure

When it comes to enjoying an adventure activity, one of the most important things for many people will be being able to share it with friends once it has been completed. Many people will look to use mounted digital camcorders to film their exploits, and then cut the resulting footage in order to make a movie of the results.

If you are going to be heading to a particular peak or high point, including a selfie stick might seem a little extravagant, but it can help you as a solo traveler to get a picture for posterity.
