1. Group Tours
One of the simplest and most popular ways of meeting people and seeing the town or city you are visiting is to join a group tour which will be exploring your destination. This is not only a good way of orientating yourself and getting to know the basic layout of your destination, but will also attract a variety of different people meaning that you will often meet interesting and like minded people to talk to. There are also different types of tours that you can take, and while some bus tours take in the main sights of a city, a walking tour will often give people more opportunities to talk and discuss the destination with others on the tour.
2. Hiking
Most countries will have long and short hiking routes that people can try, and this is often a great way to meet new people, or simply to enjoy the surroundings in a quiet and idyllic setting. Those taking a longer hike with stops in huts along the route will also have the pleasure of being able to meet people at the huts during the evening, while they can also choose whether to walk alone or with new friends during the day. This is especially good for those who are traveling on a budget, as it will usually be quite inexpensive, with just a small fee for the bed every night and most food bought in supermarkets and carried in your pack.
3. Cooking And Cultural Classes
Another great activity for those who are traveling by themselves is to take a class which allows them to immerse themselves in the local culture, with subjects such as cooking and dancing both popular cultural experiences. These are generally group activities and solo travelers will join others for the class, which will provide a shared experience, whether it is preparing dishes from the local cuisine or learning to dance like the locals. Group classes will vary from place to place and can depend on availability at the time, but are usually fun introductions to your destination, and a good way to meet others who are exploring the area.
4. Team Activities
There are many activities that can be enjoyed that do require a team activity, including sports such as white water rafting and paintball, so in many cases these can be great chances to meet fellow travelers. Some of the best team experiences are those that will bring people together and encourage co-operation. Once the day is done, why not suggest a post activity drink with your team mates if you find their company to be fun?
5. Practice Your Language Skills
Meeting new people while abroad doesn't have to involve other travelers, and if you have been practicing your language skills before heading to the country, why not take the leap and strike up a conversation with one of the locals. In many countries they will also be keen to take a chance to practice their English, so it can be a mutually beneficial experience. Whether it is simply discussing the quality of the goods in a market, watching sport in a bar with locals or ordering a cup of coffee, speaking a few words of the local language can open up whole new experiences that group trips won't be able to experience.
