- 1). Buy a cassette tape adapter. If your Outback has a tape player, this approach is ideal. Connect one end of the adapter to the iPod's headphone jack, then insert the cassette end into the tape deck. The iPod will play through the Outback's speakers via the tape deck.
- 2). Buy an FM transmitter. Originally designed to enable people with CD players to listen to them in their cars via the radio, these devices also work well with iPods, and many companies offer iPod-specific transmitters. Tune the transmitter to an open FM frequency, and let it do the rest. The transmitter will use the frequency to play your iPod's music.
- 3). Install an auxiliary cable by taking your Outback to a car audio specialist and requesting the appropriate connector. Many retailers offer free installation with the purchase. The small audio cable the installer wires into your stereo allows you to connect the iPod directly to the Outback's stereo. This option creates the best-quality sound for iPod-to-car listening.
