When your blood sugar is low, you should consume foods that are comprised of complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are absorbed at slower rate than simple carbohydrates. The slow absorption helps to stabilize you blood sugar without a sharp spike in your sugar level. - Foods that contain complex carbohydrates include vegetables, grains, fruits breads and pastas.
Foods that contain simple carbohydrates include pastries, cookies cakes and pies. - Consume more high fiber foods. When you eat foods with high fibers, the carbohydrates you consumed are absorbed more slowly. Some foods with high fiber include wheat, broccoli, cabbage, potatoes, carrots and apples.
- Avoid drinking alcohol, for alcohol can cause your blood sugar levels to drop. You should also try to avoid foods and beverages that contain caffeine.
It is better to eat fruit rather than to drink a fruit drink with sugar. - Some emergency things you can eat or drink that will help with low blood sugar are pieces of hard candy (five or six pieces), 5 to 6 oz. of regular non-diet soda, 1 tbsp. of jelly or sugar or three glucose tablets.
Glucose tablets are available without a prescription at most pharmacies.
