- Eat complex carbohydrates in controlled amounts to avoid a spike in blood sugar. Complex carbohydrates include whole grains, vegetables and legumes (beans and peas).
- Eat five to six smaller meals per day. This helps to maintain normal blood sugar levels.
- Read labels to identify hidden sugars. Sucrose, glucose, dextrose, lactose and fructose are all forms of sugar.
- Proteins and fats take longer to digest and do not create spikes in blood sugar. Eat them along with moderate amounts of carbohydrates to help lower and maintain blood sugar levels.
- Our bodies burn off blood sugars in the blood stream first for energy when we exercise. For this reason it helps to lower blood sugar. Walking for extended periods of time costs you nothing and works well.
- There aren't currently any effective homeopathic medicines that replace insulin from the pharmaceutical companies. If you have high blood sugar that can not be managed through exercise and diet, see your doctor; diabetes can be a life-threatening illness.
