How to Get a Passport For the First Time

    • 1). Check with the Department of State to find a passport service center near you. Many post offices and county offices offer passport services. See the Resources below to search for a provider.

    • 2). Gather the documents needed to apply for your first passport. Requirements are universal and do not vary between states. You will need a certified copy of your birth certificate and your state-issued photo identification. Applicants 16 and younger are not required to provide photo identification; instead, the parent's identification is used.

    • 3). Find out if your passport service center provides passport photography services. If not, seek out a professional photographer for your passport photo. Two photos are required. The passport photos must measure 2 by 2 inches, show a clear view of your face and be taken against a light background.

    • 4). Determine how soon you will need the passport. Processing times tend to range between 10 and 12 weeks, depending on the number of applicants. The US Department of State recommends expediting ($60 fee) your passport application if you need it in less than 10 weeks.

    • 5). Visit your passport service center and fill out form DS-82 or DS-11 (available at the center). Turn your application into the representative for processing, including the required documents. Don't forget to bring the required fee, which is $75 for adults and $60 for minors, as of September 2009. Most service centers also charge a processing fee, usually $25.
