Plastering tips for DIY

At first glance plastering might seem easy to a DIY entusiast. But as many have found out plastering is an art and requires precision in technique, attention to detail and abit of know-how.

The first step in plastering project is having the right equipment.
  • Hand board(hawk) and Float
  • (optional) paint scraper for the edges
  • Plastering bucket (you can use a rubble bucket) for mixing and a standard building bucket for rinsing off in
  • Plaster(multi-finish is recommended you can buy it in many DIY stores  i.e Wickes)
  • electric whisk/ or a stick
  • brush
  • PVA glue
  • scrim tape(if required)
  • water

Once you have the right equipment the next step is to prep the area. you can prep the area by following these steps:

If plastering on plaster board you need to scrim tape the joints and edges/ or if your plastering a rendered wall you need to clean all wallpaper of walls, scrape off as much paint as you can, if there's paint on the wall that wont cum off you need to score it i.e scratch it with a paint scraper
clean any dirt of the floor otherwise you may get particles on the plaster whilst plastering which will put lines in your plaster.
lift up carpet out off room as plastering can be messy or you can place a dust sheet down
now you need to water down your PVA and paste it over the rendered walls to seal the pours of the walls. this stops the wall sucking out the moisture from the plaster. This helps keep the plaster from setting faster and stops the plaster from cracking

The next step is mixing the plaster. We reccommend using thistle multi finish plaster. There are different methods to mixing plaster so you need to find one that suits you. You only have a certain timescale to apply the plaster once mixed before it starts to set and becomes unusable.

Now its time to apply the plaster. Stick to a small area like an alcove. Applying plaster is done in 4 stages.

Apply first coat of plaster quite thickly(then clean handboard and float)
Apply a thin second coat making sure you fill any gaps or divets (clean handboard and float)
Pulling lines out of plaster and touch up the edges, allow plaster to set a little before you start pulling lines out. You only need your Float, paint scraper and brush for this stage. also remember to clean your float regulary whilst pulling lines out (clean float off afterwards)
The final stage is polishing the plaster. wet your brush and sparingly wet walls(dont apply to much water as your end up with water streak marks) then run your float from left to right across the wall.

***Always keep your tools clean***
