- To qualify for unemployment benefits in Kentucky, you must have work history in the state. It makes no difference that you are now living in California if you worked in Kentucky in the last 18 months. Your job loss must have been through no fault of your own. You must be able to accept employment and you must be actively looking for a new job to qualify for benefits.
- When you lose your job in one state and then move to another state, you can file for unemployment benefits against the original state. When this happens, the original state is the paying state and the new state in which you live is the agent state. This type of unemployment claim is called an interstate claim. An interstate claim exists whether you file for the unemployment benefits in the new state or the old state.
- If you prefer to file your interstate claim through the California Employment Development Department, you can do that only by phone. The EDD does not allow online or by-mail applications when you have worked in a state other than California over the last 18 months. The toll-free number to call is (800) 300-5616. As of June 2011, phone representatives are available between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PST from Monday through Friday of each week, except on holidays. To file the claim you need to have your Social Security number, your address, your dates of employment at each job you had over the last 18 months and contact information for each of those jobs.
- To file your unemployment claim directly with the Kentucky Office Of Employment And Training, you can use one of two available methods. If you have Internet access, you can use the KEWES website (ky.gov) to submit the claim online. If you prefer to submit the claim by phone, you can call the telephone claim filing division at (502) 875-0442. As of June 2011, the number is accessible between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. EST from Monday through Friday of each week, except on holidays. To file the claim, you need to have your Social Security number, your address, your dates of employment at each job you had over the last 18 months and contact information for each of those jobs.
