Things to Collect on Shelves

    Reading Material

    • A top shelf provides space for a first edition book of poetry or the latest top seller novel. Group a collection of books by size, color, author or genre on your shelf. Stand a collection of the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew books together by corresponding years while stacking graphic novels or vintage comic books to the sides in baskets. Purchase a couple plastic cases that allow you to stand the comics up and protect them from the air before placing the cases on the shelf.

    Toys

    • A vintage toy train collection with tracks takes over the whole shelf with different types of trains inside the tracks. A collection of porcelain dolls, snug in their stands, looks out at guests as they stand behind a collection of jesters posed sitting in groups and as music box pieces. A car collection of miniature cars, placed in cases allows you to view all by creating a step display and stacking them from front to back.

    Frames and Pictures

    • A collection of picture frames and photographs fill the shelf. Purchase frames representative from places you have visited or ones composed from unusual material, such as woven leaves, sand or twigs. Insert pictures of you with family and friends, and group the frames on the shelf. Varying sizes of the frames, from a 3-by-3 inch frame to an 11-by-7 frame, allows an arrangement with small frames in front with taller ones behind. Elevate the frames by placing them on old cereal or shoe boxes so all frames are visible.

    Crystal or Glass

    • A collection of crystal goblets surrounds a decorative decanter while a set of souvenir shot glasses sits in front. Vintage perfume bottles group together in one corner of the shelf with crystal figurines of Irish legends, such as a leprechaun, shamrock and harp, beside it. A crystal gravy boat with knife rests before it with crystal balls of varying sizes on stands behind it. Depression era glass vases and bowl hold a glass flower arrangement.
