- A top shelf provides space for a first edition book of poetry or the latest top seller novel. Group a collection of books by size, color, author or genre on your shelf. Stand a collection of the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew books together by corresponding years while stacking graphic novels or vintage comic books to the sides in baskets. Purchase a couple plastic cases that allow you to stand the comics up and protect them from the air before placing the cases on the shelf.
