- 1). Check to ensure your air or water heating or cooling system is compatible with a Honeywell CT3200 thermostat. This thermostat cannot be used with electric baseboard, steam, heat pump, multistage heat pump or conventional multistage systems. Most home-improvement or hardware stores with heating and cooling departments can help you determine whether you are able to use a Honeywell CT3200 thermostat with your existing or new heating or cooling system.
- 2). Cut off the power to your heating and cooling system. Turn the cooling and heating unit's power off, then cut power at the main circuit board by locating and turning off the switch that controls the power going to your heating and cooling system.
- 3). Unscrew your old thermostat from its mounted position on the wall. Do not remove the wires from the old thermostat.
- 4). Label all the wires going to the old thermostat. The back of the old thermostat should have letter designations where each wire is connected. Do not label the wires by color, but label the wires going to your old thermostat according to the letter designations where wires are connected to the back of your old thermostat. Labels are provided with the Honeywell CT3200 thermostat.
- 5). Disconnect the wires from your old thermostat.
- 6). Install the Honeywell CT3200 mounting plate on the wall where your old thermostat was located. Disconnect the mounting plate from the new thermostat using a coin. Hold the mounting plate up to the wall and mark where the screw holes are located on the plate. Drill appropriate-sized pilot holes for the screws that are included with the new thermostat for installing the mounting plate. Place the mounting plate on the wall. Line up the drilled pilot holes with the screw holes on the mounting plate. Pull the wires through the opening of the mounting plate. Tighten the plate to the wall by installing screws in the pilot holes.
- 7). Set the switch on the back of the thermostat to determine what type of fuel your heating or cooling unit uses. There is a designation for gas or electricity.
- 8). Adjust the screws on the back of the Honeywell thermostat to define what type of heating or cooling unit you are using. A chart is provided with the thermostat to help adjust these screws for different type of units. For example, the screws must be adjusted differently for hot water heaters and air conditioners.
- 9). Install batteries in the thermostat.

Strip 1 inch of the wire sheathing from the wires using the wire cutters. Connect the wires to the Honeywell thermostat. Match up the labels on the wires with the labels on the terminals of the Honeywell thermostat. To connect wires to the thermostat, loosen the terminal screws and slide the exposed wire with sheathing removed under the terminal screws. Tighten the terminal screws onto the wire to hold the wire in place. - 11
Hold the thermostat up to the mounting plate and align the top and bottom of the thermostat with the edges of the mounting plate. Press the thermostat firmly onto the mounting plate to click the thermostat into place onto the mounting plate. You can now set the time and temperature and other settings on your thermostat accordingly. - 12
Turn on the power at the heating or cooling unit and then at the circuit breaker box. Test the thermostat and heating or cooling unit to ensure they are functioning properly.
