Summer programs for girls present an opportunity to learn new skills and techniques in a supportive environment where they can feel free to be themselves. Instructors are generally women as well, and therefore act as compelling role models for the girls they teach. Many camps encourage girls to pursue their interests in areas that are typically male-dominated, such as science and engineering, and contact sports. - Camp Wicosuta has been offering four-week summer camp opportunities to young girls since 1920. The camp has more than 30 activities to choose from, including dance, cooking, drama, gymnastics, tennis and the Wico Extreme. The youngest campers between the ages of 7 and 9 participate in a predetermined program of activities, while 10-year-olds complete a prearranged program as well as a choice of electives. Girls who are over the age of 10 select the activities they would like to participate in throughout the summer. The dance program introduces and develops each child's skills in jazz, hip hop and musical theater. At the end of the camp, students perform in a show for parents. The camp conducts a gymnastics program in an indoor facility with equipment such as balance beams, uneven bars, trampolines and low beams. Campers perform a demonstration at the conclusion of the program. The Wico Extreme program provides adventure through activities such as wall climbing and rappelling, archery, high ropes, zip lining and whitewater rafting.
