California Window Tint Laws

    Windshield

    • No tinting is allowed on the windshield except across the top four inches of the windshield. The tinting must be transparent and can't be red or amber in color, can't have any opaque lettering and can't be more reflective than the windshield.

    Front side windows

    • No tinting is allowed on front side windows unless the car owner has signed permission from a physician or optometrist stating that the owner has a medical condition that requires him to be shaded from the sun. Also, the tinting can't be permanent. You must be able to remove it at night, unless you plan to roll down your front side windows whenever you drive at night.

    Rear side windows

    • In order for the rear side windows to be tinted, the car must be equipped with side rear-view mirrors on both sides. These mirrors must give the driver a clear view of the road behind the car for at least 200 feet.

    Rear window

    • In order for the back window to be tinted, the car must have side rear-view mirrors on both sides. This is the same rule that applies to tinting on rear side windows.

    UV blockers

    • Transparent, colorless material designed to reduce the penetration of ultraviolet light rays into the vehicle can be applied to the front side windows, but it must allow at least 88 percent of the light through and the vehicle's owner must have written proof from the manufacturer that the material was installed for the purpose of reducing UV light. If the material becomes torn or bubbles, it must be removed or replaced.
