- 1). Open iTunes.
- 2). Open your iTunes preferences. For Mac users, click "iTunes" in the menu bar and select "Preferences" from the drop down menu. For Windows users, click "Edit" in the menu bar and select "Preferences" from the drop down menu.
- 3). Click the "General" tab in the upper left corner of the "Preferences" window.
- 4). Click the "Import Settings" button near the bottom of the window.
- 5). Select "MP3 Encoder" as your import method at the top of the "Import Settings" window.
- 6). Select a lower quality setting from the list of "Quality" options provided. Your three options are Higher Quality (192 kbps), High Quality (160 kbps) and Good Quality (128 kbps). The lower quality you choose, the more songs will fit on your iPod. Note that choosing a lower quality will also have a slight impact on the sound.
- 7). Click "OK" on both the "Import Settings" window and the "Preferences" window to save the changes.
- 8). Click on "Music" in the left column of your iTunes browser, near the very top of the window just beneath "Library."
- 9). Highlight all of the songs that you want to add to your iPod. Click a song once to highlight it, and hold down the "Shift" key to highlight multiple songs.
- 10
Click "Advanced" in the menu bar and select "Create MP3 Version" from the menu bar. iTunes will then create duplicate versions of each song using the lower MP3 quality that you previously selected. - 11
Transfer your new MP3 files to your iPod. The lower quality will allow for more space on your iPod hard drive.
