Changing Your Pool Game is Not a Trivial Matter - Do So With Caution

Changing your style of play is no trivial matter, you must be very sure it's something you want to do.
This may sound like a strange little piece of advice, but it's integral to staying happy as an amateur player.
A good portion of how to do that is by playing how you love to play and finding a way to make it work.
I've seen many players who dwell on the negative aspects of their own pool games, and then begin a program of change to 'improve' that only seems to bring them misery and more failure.
Worse yet, I've witnessed players harping on their friend's game or their teammate's game, thus spreading the misery around to everyone else as well.
No one seems to remember that we're all amateur players and our only time to play or practice might just be warm-ups before that week's match.
With that being the case, how is anyone supposed to stuff in enough 'quality time' to change their game and make it work? I'm not saying it's impossible to change or improve one's style, but I'm asking you how much effort is it going to take? How willing are you to put in the extra time and dedicated, focused practice that it's going to take to significantly improve your understanding of how to play pool? And how much is it really necessary, anyways? I know a great many people who are very happy being ranked 4's or 5's, even if they once in a while lament their lack of a greater game.
I'm here to tell you that your game, your style of play, is fine.
It's great! Especially if you're the happiest when 'your game' is doing great and you're having fun.
What you have to realize is that you can improve as an amateur player and still keep you own personal style of play.
The "changes" you think you need to make are probably really just developing and practicing those things you love to do.
Do you love bank shots, and take them at the drop of a hat? Maybe even seek them out? Do you love winging in sharp-angled shots juiced with spin and zooming all over the table for your next position? Do you love soft breaking, and then grinding your hotshot opponent down with a zillion safes until you get down to an easy three-ball run? That's fantastic! Don't ever change your style of game unless you really and truly want to.
Don't ever let a disgruntled teammate suck all the fun out of your league night, and don't let him/her drive you into changing things you love to do unless you decide that yes, you want to make changes.
Yes, like I said, it sounds strange to advise something like this, but it's important to understand that there's nothing wrong with being a risk-taker or a turtle-er.
There are levels of consequence that go with any style of play, and if you've acknowledged and accepted them then by all means keep on trucking.
Its only for YOU to decide, especially at the amateur level where players very often cannot take more time out of a busy, busy life to successfully practice and implement changes.
So instead, I challenge you to focus on what you love to do in a pool game, and learn to make that better! Because, if you're working on a style or shot that you really fancy, you'll get more benefit from the practice you are able to give it.
If you improve your consistency and performance with the things that are most prominent about your style, you will garner more success in your matches, and you will stay happier and more excited every time you play, which will lead to even greater consistency and greater successes.
This, in turn, might give you the justification to tell your harping teammates to "Shaddup and watch!"
