How to Have a Healthy Baby - Nutritional Foundations For Healthy Growth and Development

Every parent wants their newborn baby to be healthy.
So what can we do to ensure that the baby has the healthiest possible start in life? First of all it's important to know that the most crucial time for the health of your baby is three months or so before he or she is even conceived.
If the father is in the best possible health, he will provide the healthiest sperm.
Meanwhile, the mother needs her body to be in peak condition too - not just for the health of her future baby, but that of her own too.
Whilst she is pregnant, the baby will be using up some of her stored nutrients.
The next most important time is the first 12 weeks of the pregnancy, when the mum-to-be may not be aware she is pregnant.
During this time it's essential to get the vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids mentioned below.
Research has shown there are various key nutrients which are essential for the correct development of the foetus and, as mentioned above, this starts from 90 days or so before conception even takes place.
These nutrients are:
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin A
  • Selenium
  • B vitamins
  • Folic Acid
  • Essential Fatty Acids
During the past few years more and more studies are showing the importance of Vitamin D, and that the majority of people tested are in fact shown to be deficient in this vitamin.
Pregnant women in France are being given huge doses of Vitamin D because it's been shown to help prevent multiple sclerosis.
Vitamin D is found in dairy produce and fish, and comes from the UVB rays from the middle-of-the-day sun.
It's also been shown time and time again that alcohol and stress have an anti-nutrient effect on both parents-to-be.
So, don't forget, if you are thinking about trying for a baby - start thinking about your diet now - and that goes for the father too! Always ensure you use any supplements with care and make sure you follow the advice of your medical practitioner.
