What Are the Dangers of a Broken Eating Dish?

    Injury

    • Broken dishes that are in regular use continue to break down over time, depositing shards or chips into the food itself. A customer at your restaurant or a guest in your house may ingest the piece, causing him to get sick due to the content of the shards, or it can even puncture the stomach lining or small intestine. These chips, or shards can also cause a blockage in the digestive system. The cracks or chips in the eating dish break more easily, possibly cutting people's hands or feet.

    Bacteria

    • Broken areas of eating dishes or even cracks can harbor large amounts of bacteria which are not killed by anti-bacterial soaps used during the dishwashing process. The seal on the eating dishes which contributes to the sanitation of the dishware is broken when the cracks or chips occur, allowing bacteria to take root in the dish itself. Bacteria can lead to individual illness or numerous people getting sick at once, which is a real problem for restaurant establishments and can cause them to receive citations for health code violations.

    Appearance

    • Chipped, broken or cracked dishes also make a restaurant or meal served in a home look cheap or unprofessional, making those eating wary of the safety of their meal or what they are eating. This is an entirely aesthetic concern but is especially important within fine restaurants whose business is partly based on the customer or guests dining experience outside of the food preparation, which also determines the level of a restaurant's success.
