How to Replace the Damper Pads on a Washing Machine

    Opening the Cabinet Front

    • 1). Disconnect the washing machine power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2). Pull the machine from the wall. Lift the front of the washing machine, tilting it back against the wall to raise the bottom of the washing machine cabinet.

    • 3). Slide a slotted screwdriver into the seam on each side of the washing machine at the front cabinet base. Twist the screwdriver slightly to release the front of the cabinet from the tabs along the bottom of the washing machine.

    • 4). Lift the front panel of the washing machine toward you to release the clips from the top of the panel. Gently lower the washing machine back onto the floor.

    • 5). Remove the two screws holding the top of the washing machine to the cabinet body. The screws are located at the top front left and right corners of the cabinet.

    • 6). Tape the washing machine lid shut and lift the top of the washing machine cabinet up, letting it rest against the wall.

    Removing the Entire Cabinet

    • 1). Disconnect the washing machine power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2). Remove the two screws holding the control panel to the top of the washing machine. Locate these screws to the left and right of the control panel. Some control panels snap into the top of the machine. Insert a putty knife or slotted screwdriver beneath the front corners of the control panel, and with a slight twisting motion, pop the control panel from the washing machine.

    • 3). Tilt the control panel back and away from the top of the machine. Disconnect the wiring harness that connects the control panel to the washing machine.

    • 4). Insert a slotted screwdriver into the clips beneath the control panel that hold the top in place. This action releases the clips. Lift the entire cabinet away from the machine, exposing the tub.

Replacing the Damper Pads without Removing the Tub

    • 1). Mark the depth of the three eyebolts holding the tub springs to the base of the cabinet by wrapping masking tape around the bolts. This allows you to tighten the eyebolts to the proper depth after you replace the damper pads.

    • 2). Tilt the washing machine back against the wall to access the nuts holding the eyebolts to the cabinet. Hold a spring in one hand while you loosen the eyebolts with a socket wrench. Failing to hold the spring could result in injury.

    • 3). Cut four 2-by-4-inch pieces of lumber 18 inches long. Stack one piece of lumber on top of the other to create two stacks. Place these two stacked pieces of lumber onto the floor beneath the washer and the transmission pulley.

    • 4). Lower the washer onto the lumber. This action pushes the tub assembly up and exposes the base, so you can access the damper pads.

    • 5). Clean the interior of the washing machine cabinet to remove any dust, dirt and grime with a general purpose cleaner and degreaser. Scrape the remainder of the worn damper pads from the exposed base.

    • 6). Apply adhesive to the base where the original damper pads were located. Use an adhesive that adheres felt to melt. Place the pads on the base, allowing 5/8 inch of space between each pad. Allow the adhesive to dry for the time required by the adhesive.

    • 7). Lubricate the felt damper pads with the silicone grease lubricant provided with the damper pads. Remove the lumber from beneath the washer to lower the tub assembly.

    • 8). Replace the eyebolts that hold the springs to the bottom of the cabinet. Close the washing machine cabinet and plug the washer into the wall outlet.

Removing the Tub to Replace the Pads

    • 1). Squeeze the water hose clamp attached to the water inlet spout with pliers to slide it down the hose. Pull the hose off the inlet spout and unsnap the spout from the cabinet.

    • 2). Remove the agitator cap from the top of the agitator to access the agitator bolt. Use a 7/16 socket and wrench to remove the bolt. Pull the agitator off the driveshaft and out of the tub.

    • 3). Place a spanner wrench over the tub nut located on the driveshaft. Hit the wrench with a hammer to turn it counterclockwise and remove the tub nut.

    • 4). Unsnap the tub ring from the top of the tub and remove it. Lift the inner wash tub up and off the driveshaft. Slide the drive block from the driveshaft by tapping it up and off the shaft with a hammer.

    • 5). Pull the three suspension springs from the mounting brackets attached to the bottom of the exterior tub with pliers. Remove the spring mounting brackets with a socket wrench from the exterior tub.

    • 6). Pull the water pressure level switch tube off the side of the outer tub. Squeeze the drain hose clamp with pliers and slide it down the hose. Pull the drain hose from the exterior washer tub.

    • 7). Spray lubricant on the driveshaft to pull the outer tub off the driveshaft. Pull the metal shield from the frame that protects the motor from water.

    • 8). Lift the driveshaft and shaft base off the base of the machine. Wedge a 6- to 8-inch block of lumber between the driveshaft base and the washing machine base to support the driveshaft base of the washing machine base, so you can access the plastic damper pads.

    • 9). Insert a slotted screwdriver beneath the original plastic damper pads to snap them from the base. Insert replacement pads into the holes left from the original pads. Tap the pads in place with a hammer.

Reverse the disassembly steps to reassemble your washing machine.
