- New Jersey, like many states, trains future officers in coursework and physical instruction at its state police academy. However, field training gets these cadets out into the real-world environment and exposes them to many different professional and tactical applications. It also gives them real time with experienced officers who may soon be their colleagues and partners.
- Qualified officers must be available to conduct field training. One program for potential field training officers, given at the Morris County Police Academy, lasts three days. Officers are trained not only in how to ensure the proper development of new officers but how to inform them of ethical, professional and practical issues that they will confront in day-to-day law enforcement duties.
- The New Jersey State Police possesses a Field Training Unit that trains law enforcement officers as well as private-sector or public employees. The instruction is directed towards "emergency management" and uses federal guidelines to ensure their efforts are applicable to all the tiers of state government. They train responsiveness to both natural and manmade crises. The unit offers almost 30 different class options.
