- All commissioned officers in the U.S. military, including the Marine Corps, must be graduates of accredited four-year colleges. In many specialties, advanced degrees are required for promotion to higher ranks. All USMC officers must go through a rigorous officer training program, either at the naval academy, through an ROTC program, or through Officer Candidate School (OCS).
- According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the basic salary for a Marine second lieutenant (Pay Grade O-1) with less than two years' experience is $2655.30. The basic salary for a Marine second lieutenant with over four years' experience is $3340.50.
- All U.S. military service members also receive extra pay for foreign duty, hazardous duty, submarine and flight duty, and/or employment as a medical officer. At some duty stations, service members receive a housing allowance for off-base housing that is usually over $1,000 a month.
- Marines, like all U.S. military personnel, receive free room and board, free medical care, and access to gyms, libraries, movie theaters and other recreational facilities free or at reduced rates at most bases. Military personnel are also eligible for full retirement benefits after 20 years of service, and the Veteran's Administration provides many benefits to all who served more than 24 months of continuous active duty in the Armed Forces.
