• Boilers work by circulating hot water throughout the system. Homeowners can check the piping to see if the water is circulating. The pipes are supposed to be hot, so touch them lightly or with a thin cotton glove to protect your skin. Check all pipes, radiators and baseboard heaters. What Are Those Noises?

• A boiler operating with noticeable noise could have problems. A banging noise could mean oil is being left in burn chambers causing sudden ignition; constant noise while running can indicate a dirty boiler that needs cleaning and servicing. • Some boiler problems are visible. If you notice water leaks or see rust, boiler problems are probably present. Boiler tanks that show visible burn marks or soot can have dangerous gas leaks and should be serviced.
