- 1). Obtain a copy of your credit report free of charge at annualcreditreport.com. Open an account and provide all of your personal information. Order a copy of your credit report from all three bureaus. You will be able to download the reports immediately.
- 2). Obtain a copy of your bankruptcy schedules from the court clerk’s office, if you did not retain a copy when you filed. You may also get a copy from your attorney, if you had one. You will need Schedules D, E and F, which will provide all creditors listed in your bankruptcy, the amounts owed, the addresses and account numbers.
- 3). Review your credit report and bankruptcy schedules. Begin with Schedule D and work your way down, checking to see if each account is on your credit report. Pay special attention to the balance of each account. Although the account will still be listed, the amount owed should be $0.
- 4). Make a note of any accounts that do not have a zero balance. Verify that all information for that creditor is listed correctly on your bankruptcy paperwork. Compile a list of all accounts that do not have a zero balance for each credit bureau.
- 5). Write a letter to each credit bureau disputing the accounts that have inaccurate information or do not have a zero balance. Explain what information needs to be corrected and include a copy of your bankruptcy discharge to show the successful completion of the bankruptcy.
- 6). Follow up with the credit bureaus with any additional information they request. There will likely be several letters back and forth with the credit bureaus as they investigate the legitimacy of your dispute. Promptly respond or you will risk having to start over in the process.
